NextSense
NextSense is a not-for-profit organisation focusing on supporting individuals and families impacted by hearing and vision loss. We offer a wide range of services, including research, education, and direct support, aiming to break down barriers and empower individuals to reach their full potential. NextSense is a leading provider in Australia, delivering Australia's largest cochlear implant program and conducting research on sensory disability.

Meet Emily
Emily might only be nine, but she’s already giving back. As the highest individual fundraiser for NextSense for Loud Shirt Day last year, she helped raise more than $7000 to support other children who are deaf or hard of hearing. And she’s hoping to do it all again this year.
After losing her hearing suddenly three years ago due to meningitis, Emily received cochlear implants in both ears to help her re-gain access to sound.
She’s got lots of people in her corner. Along with her family, friends, itinerant support teacher and school community, Emily’s is supported by her NextSense audiologist and speech pathologist, who are helping her learn to interpret the new sounds through her cochlear implants.
“Emily’s embraced her hearing loss… she is really resilient. At first she had to work harder to hear, but it’s gotten much better,” says her Mum, Natalie.
The family, from Hobartville in New South Wales, is passionate about raising awareness of hearing loss and helping children who are deaf or hard of hearing to reach their full potential. Each October, to celebrate Loud Shirt Day, Natalie donates 10 percent of the proceeds of her small business to NextSense. She has also rallied support from the wider Hobartville community, with Emily’s dance studio and school getting behind the cause.
Emily is flourishing in the classroom and beyond. She loves dancing and art, particularly drawing and crafts, and is even learning a new language—Auslan—alongside the rest of her family.
