We're getting LOUD to support children with hearing loss.

It’s no secret that Central Queensland is one of the most incredible places to live, but it’s also well known that regional health services can be underfunded and neglected, leaving so many of us to travel or even move to Brisbane to seek the services we so desperately need.

That’s the position that Charlotte Rivett and her family found themselves in when, at 2 years of age, Charlotte became profoundly deaf overnight from a common cold. It was a devastating time for the Yeppoon-based family and extremely confusing for Charlotte. After a period of 4 months with no sound, Charlotte underwent a successful cochlear implant surgery at the Queensland Children’s Hospital, which was just the start of their regular travel to Brisbane for auditory mapping and rehabilitation.

Not-for-profit Hear and Say helped guide the Rivett family through the entire implant process, providing audiology services in Brisbane and speech therapy services to Charlotte via telehealth.

Those services that helped Charlotte learn to listen again and allowed the Rivett family to stay in Yeppoon rather than move to Brisbane are also offered to more than 50 families under school age living in regional and remote areas of Queensland, and even more to school age families.

Charlotte, now six years old, is thriving along with her peers, thanks to the support of Hear and Say and she wants to help other regional families going through the hearing loss journey.
