Get LOUD for kids with hearing loss!
Cooper was born with a permanent Mild Hearing Loss in his left ear. He failed the Newborn Hearing Screen twice in the hospital on his first few days earth side. We were then referred to PCH where he underwent Audiology Assessments, ENT Appointments and a MRI before we were referred through their Parent Liason to TSH.
Through TSH we have been attending fortnightly Speech Therapy sessions along with Audio Testing.
Last year, after spending some time with the Audiologists at Hearing Australia, Cooper was fitted with Hearing Aid.
Due to his age and the level of his loss, its not something Cooper has taken to yet.
Early this year, we identifed through an Audio Assessment that Cooper had a perforation around his grommet in his left year. This was causing Coopers hearing loss to sit at a Moderate to Severe loss level.
Cooper underwent surgery in May of this year and our ENT performed a Myringoplasty (removed grommet and grafted the perforation using fat from his ear lobe)
This surgery isn't usually performed on children under 6. Cooper was two and half. We were told two weeks ago that unfortunately the graft hasn't fully taken. Whilst the perforation is no longer as big its still there.
We are awaiting follow up with our ENT for discussions of further treatment plans and are unsure where his hearing level in his left ear is currently sitting.
We are raising funds for LOUD SHIRT DAY to go towards TSH so that support services can be provided to more children like Cooper who live with Hearing Loss.
Did you know that, hearing loss is the most common condition diagnosed at birth in Australia and New Zealand - and by school age, 1 in 300 children will have permanent hearing loss.
Sadly, half of these children receive no specialist support, but you can help change that.
By getting LOUD and donating to Loud Shirt Day, you’ll be helping fund life-changing early intervention services that help kids learn to hear, speak and thrive.
Your support brings opportunity, connection and a brighter future to children affected by hearing loss.
This October, turn up the volume and please give generously!
Love to you and your whanau Coops xo
